The Tuscarora village was flourishing from their large fields filled with hemp to their advanced villages they were admired by others. In 1701 explorer “General John Lawson, identified 15 major Tuscarora towns along the North Carolina waterways”(Native Heritage Project). John Lawson then began spreading the word about his newly made discoveries when he published his book “A New Voyage to Carolina,” along with a mad and settlers began arriving to Tuscarora area. When the European settlers arrived to land near the Tuscarora they were able to maintain a harmonious relationship until the settlers began crossing the line. Tuscarora could not stand what the settlers were doing and the last straw was when “Chief Hancock found his villages raided and his people frequently kidnapped and sold into slavery”(New World Encyclopedia). Although the Tuscarora people were willing to accept these strangers into their homes they were not going to allow them to hurt their people. The European negatively affected their population not only due to slavery but also diseases they brought along with them. The North and South “groups were heavily impacted by the introduction of European diseases”(New World Encyclopedia). Due to the newly introduced European diseases the Tuscarora once strong population was rapidly decreasing.
