The Legalization of Marijuana The legalization of Marijuana has been a controversial subject within society for quite some time. What is Marijuana? Marijuana is defined as a tall plant with a stiff upright stem, divided serrated leaves, and glandular hairs. It is used to produce hemp fiber and as a psychotropic drug. Psychotropic is relating to or denoting drugs that affect a person's mental state. All drugs affect a person’s mental state in various ways. These are all forms of conditions that can be treated by changing the mental state of any given person. This takes the drug in question and deems it a usable drug in which means this drug would no longer fall under the controlled substances act of 1970.This is how Colorado has partially gotten their bill passed for the legalization of recreational sales and use of marijuana. Colorado has shown evidence that marijuana should be legalized not only for the medical benefits but the social and economic benefits as well (Blake, 2014, p. 359-381). The legalization of marijuana has social benefits very similar to the legalization of the drugs in the past. The legalization of marijuana would have many social benefits as there has been a history of socialism associated with drug use. Marijuana has not been the first drug illegalized for its social impact within society, the first drug illegalized for its social impacts was opium. Legalizing marijuana for recreational use may cut down on the amount of people who use it recreationally as it would be socially acceptable and regulated by the government as all previous drugs (Films media group, 2015). Colorado has pushed for the legalization of recreational marijuana and got the bill passed. With this new law in place there were many things the government could now control with the distribution of marijuana.
