Leadership Styles There are many definitions of leadership, most of which “refer to the ability of an individual to influence the behavior of others” (Catalano, 2015, p. 257). In the clinical practice, leadership is defined as “direct involvement in clinical care while constantly influencing others to improve the care they provide” (Glitinane, 2013, p. 35). The Department of Health says that the center of leadership, in the clinical setting, is “to motivate, to inspire, to promote values of the National Health Service, and to empower and create a consistent focus on the needs of the patients being served” (Glitinane, 2013, p. 257).

36). Because of the rewards that are given, these leaders can have “a positive effect on followers satisfaction and performance” (Glitinane, 2013, p. 36). They can also have a negative effect by driving the followers to “harbor hostile feelings that they are fearful to express, use passive-aggressive techniques to try to even the playing field, and feel oppressed and unable to use their full potential as a worker” (Catalano, 2015, p. ). This type of leader does not focus on the “shared values of the team” but rather focuses on the tasks at hand (Glitinane, 2013, p. 36). This style of leadership is not conducive to holistic patient care due to the focus of the nurse directed toward the task at hand and not the patient (Catalano, 2015). Followers who may thrive under this type of leadership style would be those who “are not self-motivated, who prefer structure, and appreciate significant direction and monitoring” (Hill, 2012, p. 553). Second, “within the limits established by the group, freedom of expression is allowed to maximize creativity” (Catalano, 2015, p. 258).
