He knew what his options were and he made the best of them. The ages of the boys varied from 5 to 12 so he needed to protect some more than others. 'I'm chief, We've got to make certain that there is no beast....There's no signal showing on the mountain where there may be a ship out there.” (98) This shows that Ralph cared for everyone on the island. Ralph told the Littluns that they will be ok and eventually they will all get back home. This is a great leadership quality that a leader needs. He needed to be calm and keep his emotion in check while being compassionate for others. Ralph is doing his best to keep everyone calm and safe. He doesn't have people going out looking for food for him. He is trying to get the two groups back together, but Jack likes the power and declines the offer. “You're no good on a job like this.'"(22) Jack said this because he thinks his leadership is better than Ralph's. Jack doesn't think that Ralph can handle this job. Ralph knows that his group is slowly dying because food is low and Jack's group is always planning an attack on his group. Ralph is stuck in a sticky situation and is trying to do whatever he can do to keep his group safe. He ultimately failed, and he lets Jack’s power take over and try to destroy Ralph’s hope. He has failed not only himself but his group as well. His group gets captured and Ralph hides from Jack. At the end of the book a Navy Officer comes and rescues, but asks one question, “Who is the leader”, Jack backs down and Ralph answers, “I am” This showing confidence that Jack didn't seem to have when the question was
