In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the character that I would’ve chosen to follow would’ve been Ralph. Ralph exemplifies good leadership skills throughout the book. He is able to make lawful decisions that benefit the others while maintaining his focus on getting rescued off the island. Although most of the boys on the island decided that following Jack was a better way to go, Ralph still proved he was the better leader. Goulding chose Ralph to be the leader in the beginning of the book because Ralph didn’t think like most of the other boys did on the island. Most of the kids also want to be rescued but they don’t seem to care if they are or not. Ralph shows this through constantly wanting to keep the signal fire going throughout the book. Ralph shows this by saying this quote, “Is a fire too much for us to make? Look at us! How many are we? And yet we can't keep a fire going to make smoke. Don't you understand? Can't you see we ought to-- ought to die before we let the fire out?” This quote shows that Ralph has one concern with being on the island and that concern is that he wants to find the quickest way off of it. For Ralph to be a good leader he needs to focus on the main goal throughout the book which is getting off of the island. This characteristic is not only shown by Ralph but also Piggy, Simon, and Samneric. They may share the same belief, but they don’t have as much of a burning spirit as Ralph does. The signal fire is the main objective in order to be rescued and Ralph stayed concerned with it throughout the whole novel. In the end Ralph should be considered the best leader of all of the boys on the island. This is evident because Ralph is able to make rules, take charge, and stayed focused on the main goal of the group. This was displayed throughout the story.
