Ralph does not just lay back and watch his friends and followers do what he desires, but he participates and works along side the others to get things done. While trying to build a good shelter, Ralph said: “You remember the meeting? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?...All day I’ve been working with Simon. No one else” (51). In this quote, it mentions how everyone promised to work hard until the shelters were finished because in order to settle down on the island, the kids need shelters to keep warm and dry. However, none of the kids except Simon lent a hand in the construction of the shaky shelters. While some may scream angrily at the others kids or sit back and join the group of non-workers, Ralph, being a good leader, decides to continue helping Simon build the shelters for the rest of the group knowing his efforts will benefit everyone. A good leader should be willing to do some extra hard work for the benefit of the whole community and in this situation, the chief is not afraid to get his hands dirty to make contributions for his group and followers. As the story continues, the situation for the kids get worse and worse. After a recent sighting of the “beast”, a time of turmoil settles in and the fear inside the kids are drastically growing. The group decided to investigate and search the island for the beast. Near the thought-to-be residence of the beast, the chief, Ralph, knowing everyone is afraid, volunteers to enter the area alone and tells the rest of the kids to wait for him: “I’m chief. I’ll go.
