One reason that Ralph is an ineffective leader is that he chooses to isolate certain groups at times in order to please another. Instead, Ralph would be much better off at attempting to retain equality throughout the group rather than catering to specific portions and dividing the boys as a whole. For example, Ralph orders Piggy to remain at the camp in Chapter 1 to please Jack and accomplish more work, despite Piggy’s own wishes. This scene provides a perfect example because despite all Piggy has done to organize the group already, Ralph still blatantly denies his wishes in order to please Jack, who expressed disagreement with Piggy accompanying them on the excursion. Obviously, Ralph dividing his own group is a harmful trait.…

At the beginning of the novel Ralph makes one of his priorities clear by saying, “...we must make some smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire” (37). This shows that Ralph is productive because from the very beginning of the novel he addressed his priorities and what he believes is important. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, had many unique and sometimes controversial ideas. However, the most prominent of his ideas was the existence of different personality aspects in one's mind, these being the id, ego, and superego. The id is the source of one’s selfish desires and impulses; the superego reflects society and it’s rules and is influenced by the world around it instead of it’s own wants; the ego is the bridge between the other two, acting as a decider of whether something is right or wrong. Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding about a group of boys and their experiences on a deserted island, contains characters that personify each aspects of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Jack Merridew, the antagonistic hunter,…
