“Leadership” is much more than a simple three-syllable word. Instead, it is an extremely broad term that is constantly subject to interpretation and discussion. In my opinion, leadership is present in all aspects of life. I have been exposed to the idea of leadership since I was a young girl and have had the opportunity to hold multiple leadership positions throughout my life up until this point. Because of those various leadership positions, I am fully aware that there are thousands, if not millions, of definitions of leadership. Transactional leadership is often seen in healthcare settings and involves an exchange between the leader and the follower, sometimes referred to as a transaction. The limitation with this style of leadership is the potential for leaders and followers to focus solely on the present and getting the job done instead of looking more towards the future. On the other hand, transformational leadership involves going above and beyond the set expectations to ultimately make the vision a reality. Transformational leadership encompasses several important values including teamwork, collaboration, honesty, responsibility, and commitment. In order to be a transformational leader, an individual must have strong personal values, be willing to accept change, and be committed to inventing new and improved ways of carrying out tasks. Aside from leadership styles, there are certain characteristics that leaders should possess as well. Vince Lombardi was the oldest of five children, born on June 11, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. His father was an Italian immigrant, so it was only proper that Vince grew up in an extremely strict Catholic home. At the age of fifteen, Vince Lombardi began to study priesthood at the Cathedral College of Immaculate Conception. Two years later, Lombardi transferred to St. Francis Preparatory, where he soon became the star fullback on the football team. Lombardi went on to play football at Fordham University and graduated magna cum laude in 1937 as a member of the “Seven Blocks of Granite,” a group of the University’s most famous football players.
