Introduction The author of this paper participated in two, eight-hour nursing leadership clinical rotations at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN. In this paper, the author will analyze leadership concepts related to the clinical experience and how she can strive to become the best professional nurse leader she can be.
Self-analysis
Values and beliefs of the author include, organization, timeliness, accuracy, good work ethic, teamwork, assertiveness, advocacy, educator, quality work, compassion and honesty. While the author was observing a registered nurse at Bethesda hospital, the clinical leadership style observed was similar to the author’s style however; the nurse lacked the ability to follow policies correctly and was not assertive when necessary. Strategies. Strategies identified and used on the assigned unit that offer opportunities for development as a professional nurse leader included opportunities to join the management team, posted continuing education to learn and enhance leadership skills, other registered nurses on the floor demonstrating and role modeling leadership qualities, and care boards hung on the side of the nurses station providing team members an opportunity to express ideas and potentially initiate change to better provide patient care and patient experience.
