For a few of my days during this internship I was involved in some of those types of events. One of the first ones I was involved in was the drug take back. This is a nationwide event that happened on October 22 this year. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medication. It was an event for children to trick-or-treat in the downtown businesses of Spirit Lake. The Spirit Lake spirit lake Chamber of Commerce has put on this event for the last few years. It provides a safe way for kids to come downtown during the day and trick-or-treat.. The Spirit Lake Police Department was part of that event. This year Officer Miller and I got to be down there for the event. I got to dress up as Detective McGruff the crime-fighting dog. It is a mascot type of costume. It was really cool to see how excited the kids were when they saw me standing next to Officer Miller. We handed out sticker police badges, tattoos, pencils, and candy. We took so many pictures with kids and their families it was fun to see how happy the kids were to be able take a picture with us. The event only lasted two hours but we saw over 100 kids during that time. Another cool thing I observed was how many people thank you Officer Miller for what he does. It was really great to see the respect people had for the officers in our community. It 's events like the one we did here that let people know please officers are more than just writing you tickets. They are people who help serve and protect your community and become great role models for your children. Its situations like this that make me excited to get into law
