The corn was placed in the 55g of soil and was watered with 30ml twice over six days. The plant was also kept in conditions which were replicated in the experiment. However, it was not exposed to vanadium. The plant showed significant growth and proved data could be taken. This trial confirmed that corn would be a suitable plant species to test as it grew within the time frame and conditions that the experiment required.
Experimental protocol:
4 groups were set up, each containing 7 plants. The first group was a control group and was only given distilled water. The second group was one time exposed to 0.5 millimolar of vanadium. The third group was one time exposed to 1.4 millimolar of vanadium. The fourth group was one time exposed to 2.2 millimolar of vanadium
55 grams of dry soil was placed in each pot resulting in a total weight of 60.28 grams. Before putting corn seed 3.81cm below soil surface moisten the soil with 100 ml of distilled water. 550 micro molar solution of vanadium is added to group two. 1.4 millimolar solution of vanadium is added to group three. Finally, 2.2 millimolar solution of vanadium is added to group
