La Trobe will also provide managerial and technical expertise to help the student transform his or her idea to an income generating business. How the program works is summarized by the diagram on the right.
The ideas are selected by subject coordinators from the regular papers created by students in fulfilling the assessment tasks of their subjects. If a subject coordinator perceives an idea as having high potential, he or she asks the student to fill-up a concept plan template document. The furnished document will then be forwarded to a panel composed of managerial and technical experts from various La Trobe Faculties. The panel will scrutinize the concept and if the concept pass their table examination, the student will be invited to present his or her business idea. The presentation will enable the panel to ask questions and give their recommendations to further improve the concept. Once the paper is deemed probable to succeed by the panel, the business plan will then be presented to La Trobe University Management for Approval. If the university’s leadership approves the plan, the contract between La Trobe Venture Capital and the student is then prepared and signed by both parties. The contract will stipulate how much La Trobe will invest, how the university will recover its investment through profit sharing, and safe guards to ensure the venture will not damage the name of La Trobe
