To Kill A Mockingbird To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression, a time filled with hardships and racial tensions. It follows the story of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch and her older brother Jem as they live their daily lives while learning about the world around them and maturing. They live with their father Atticus, a lawyer that tries to raise his children in way so that they have mindset different from their racist surroundings. Atticus takes on a case as the lawyer of a defendant who is charged with sexual assault, which is a capital offense in the state of Alabama punishable by death. The problem though is that the defendant is a negroe, which basically guarantees that he will be convicted. Even with the possible conflict youth, he takes it on knowing that he is risking both his reputation and the well being of himself and his children. "If you shouldn 't be defendin ' him, then why are you doin ' it?"
"For a number of reasons," said Atticus. "The main one is, if I didn 't I couldn 't hold up my head in town, I couldn 't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn 't even tell you or Jem not to do something again…Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally.
