G.I Jane-Movie Midterm
Starting between the late 1700’s and ending around the mid 2000’s, women has had somewhat of an involvement in the military. They followed their husbands to war out of necessity. Many served in the military as cooks, and nurses but only with permission from the higher ranking officers. Many women were deemed as too fragile or not capable to serve as a forceful arm in the military. It was said to be unlawful, inhumane and politically crazy to grant women the right to serve in combat and have our sisters, mothers and wives coming home in “body bags”. The movie G.I Jane reflects how society wants to be portrayed; particularly the portrayal of women. In this scene we witness the senate in Texas discussing accusations of the military being gender biased when it comes to allowing women the right to enlist in the military. These very accusations are indeed factual and can be linked to the reading, “Five Faces of Oppression” by Iris Young. More seldom then none in this movie we see 2 out of the five faces of Oppression all brought onto women. Marginalization is one primary and prominent faces recognized for it is “any group that is not of the dominant group one who is used against”. (Young 8) Moore is used as a guinea pig to see if her strengths as a woman could match that of her counterparts. She was subjected to unequal treatment by being given head starts in challenges, sleeping in private headquarters which were out casted from the rest of the soldier. Another example we see of the five faces is “powerlessness” which states the lack there of authority and status.
