Of course that is true! But more than that he is a man worthy of remembering for his many accomplishments and important role in the 17th century. But to clearly identify John Winthrop let us know what the puritans were. The Puritans were a group of English Reformed Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries who sought to purify the Church of England from Roman Catholic practices. Well, John Winthrop was one of these puritans yet he was wealthy and wanted more to do with this world. He is one of the leading figures in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Massachusetts Bay Colony is the first major settlement in New England after Plymouth. Massachusetts colony, like Plymouth, was mainly occupied by puritans except that Plymouth colony’s population never rose above 7,000 which lead it to be, after ten years, overshadowed by its larger neighbor, the Massachusetts Bay Colony. To do so he had to become someone of high capabilities. He smartly took advantage of a fateful error in the royal charter for the Massachusetts Bay Company. Unlike Jamestown, the Massachusetts Bay Company was self-governing. He was elected as the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Company which was a joint-stock company commissioned by King Charles the 1st in 1629. Winthrop imagined the Colony as a "city upon a hill". John Winthrop first expressed what he saw the Colony as in his speech when he said "We shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us". Certainly, a city upon a hill can 't be hidden. He wanted to make the Massachusetts colony one that was watched by the whole world and an example of what can be achieved by the Puritans who were motivated by their religion and desire to create a government and society that was tied to the church. But to be tied to one colony wouldn 't give him much credit. John Winthrop provided the foundation not only for a colony but also for major elements in America’s cultural and political development.
