John wayne was a special case. He wasn't the typical college student, for most aren't as brutal as shown by how the majority of the guard were mild in nature and remained neutral to the harassment to the prisoner. As with every experiment there are outliers. In this case “John Wayne” was a definite outlier.

Authority is similar to an aura of full dominate control of someone. One example of Authority that’s shown when the guards are using their batons to bang on the prisons cells. It shows who's truly in control and how the hierarchy in the artificial jail works.
