In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” John seems not far from a “crummy guy” in this scenario. If readers were to point a finger at who contributed to the narrator’s mental down-spiral, John would be the convicted party. However, John is also held back by societal standards and gender roles. Throughout the story, we espy the narrator being coddled and babied by John. What kind of marriage is this?…
On April 27, 1941, a boy by the name of Jennings Michael Burch was born in Manhattan, NY. He at the time had three older brothers, and then a younger brother that was born after him. The oldest brother, Joseph, was a high school dropout, a drunk, and considered the breadwinner of the family. He was harsh with Jennings and it was said that he turned out exactly like his father, an irate alcoholic. The second oldest brother named James was very studious, and the smartest one in the family.…

It seems like everyone loves Harry Potter. Everyone has read the books, watched the movies, and take quizzes online to see what house they would be in if they went to Hogwarts. Kids want to be like Harry Potter. The books were good and so were the movies, but I think the Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans is a better character to try to imitate.…
In 2008, the Canadian government created the Indian residential schools truth and reconciliation commission which started its work to achieve an official order of reviewing the history of Canada’s Indian residential schools. The Canadian residential school system is, a system created for aboriginal people in Canada, to achieve the best chance for success by learning the English language and more importantly assimilating to Canadian culture therefore, passing it down to their children in hopes of native traditions to diminish. The Canadian government assumed that native children would have a higher chance of succeeding if they spoke English or French and adapted to mainstream Canadian society therefore, the Canadian government created this…
Overall I found this book very interesting. It covered a vast majority of topics and was very eye-opening on a lot of issues. Most of these issues happened in the past, but they clearly have affected education throughout the years and will affect education in the future. Many topics are controversial and it is very important to be educated on these so that as educators we can deal with them as they arise. This book did a wonderful job with addressing a lot of those issues, and made myself question if the world could ever go back to the segregated ways it once was.…

In Jacob Needleman’s, “The American Soul: Redicovering the Wisdom of the Founders.” He examines the difference between historical Indian morals, traditions, beliefs and common misconceptions relating to them. Needleman, an advocate for the learning and discussion of an important part of American culture, wants to recall Indian lifestyles and share them in the 21st century. Many Americans consider Indian culture to be stuck in the past, but many aspects of Iroquois legends are linked to events and issues prevalent in our modern world. Needleman discusses a ‘creation’ story, important figures, and a specific legend that all connect to modern day Christian ideals and beliefs.…
Reconstruction in the South after the Civil War would prove to be a challenging endeavor for the United States having to literally re-create an entire portion of the nation. This couldn’t be any closer to the truth in the case of New Orleans, where political reform and overhaul of its past principles, was a change that would come slowly and with a lot of time. One incident during the Reconstruction period that helps underline how hard these changes would be to achieve was the kidnapping of Mollie Digby, it is from the early “facts” about the case that help ignite turmoil in the city, state, and eventually the entire country. Before, and during, the time of the actual kidnapping of Mollie Digby the social structure and the political system…

In late 19th century Australia, the school of Australian Impressionists in the Heidelberg area formed an artist’s group that focused on painting scenes of Australia, refered as The Heidelberg School. The Impressionists were fascinated with this notion of en plein air that is the French word for “open air”. This was a technique discovered by Australian artists Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts. It was a method frequently used by the Impressionists at the school. Together, the two artists often met and painted outdoors at Box Hill located in East Melbourne, and from there artists Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder soon joined the two artists in the collective, with others (Big Black Dog Communications, 2009).…
Sports are a core component to our American society. The United States takes such pride in sport events such as the Olympics which represent us as a nation in our level of sports. A truly inspirational story reflecting how much an individual cares about his sport would be the story of athlete Steve Roland "Pre" Prefontaine who competed in the 1972 Olympics for middle and long distance track sports. Steve Prefontaine held the truly American spirit of never giving up no matter what the odds may be and that if you keep up with sheer determination you can aim for the goals that you set for yourself. He inspired so many kids by always giving them time to help motivate them which keeps the American sports interest in them.…

The Jewish theologian Martin Buber built a philosophy of encounter. The goal of human beings is to have a full encounter with one another, and eventually with God. Buber differentiated between such moments of encounter with God and the ritual practices of religion. He felt that religion actually distracted from being in God’s presence. Many people today believe that Buber was right – that religion detracts from God.…
