An individual with locked-in syndrome, part of their brainstem is damaged and this causes their facial muscle and the body to be paralysis and it makes it hard for the Jean to breathe, because his lungs cannot move and it’s important to monitor Jeans respiratory. Due to the damage of his brainstem, Jean was diagnosed with impaired speech; therefore, it made it difficult for to speak. With Jean’s speech impairment it was something that has acquired in his early forties and what caused his communication disorder was locked-in syndrome that paralyzed his body and affected his speech mechanisms such as his glossectomy (tongue) and jaw (mandible). The great thing about Jean’s disorder remained Consciousness and his eye sights were fine; moreover, Jean was able to see, and understand what the nurses, doctors and the therapies were saying. With Jean’s disorder, it was due to neurological impairment that affected his motor impairment and all of his communication process was impaired. While Jean was going through speech therapy, he had to relearn how to articulate and utter sounds so that he can improve and go back to his normal
