Data analysts, paralegals, and even some high skill level workers like computer programmers and doctors are all subject to possibilities of job loss in the future from further advancements into artificial intelligence [4]. As computers become better equipped to perform the jobs of humans, and as machine learning, “a form of artificial intelligence where the software can respond to new situations, mimicking human learning,” [4] develops they will become cheaper and more productive than human workers. The idea of a Universal Basic Income, however, had started long before, originating during the Renaissance Era, 1516, in Thomas More’s “Utopia” [7]. Throughout the centuries many famous intellectuals like Thomas Paine and John Stuart Mill examined and expanded upon the idea. Modern day, we see the idea of a Universal Basic Income being endorsed by men like Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Space-X. The purpose of the Basic Income was to tackle poverty. Modern day, it is now becoming a more prevalent way to fix the current large income inequality and as a way to tackle the large upcoming inequality of the future. An idea that’s stayed true to its core reason after centuries, Universal Basic Incomes have a large history in theory, and now thanks to a huge problem on the horizon it is finally a feasible policy to pass in the near future. If we do not attempt this solution soon, however, or find a better one in the near future, Martin Ford predicts that we may, in fact, see an economic crash unlike any seen before [4]. An economic crash caused by severe inequality that could cause a “catastrophic implosion of the capitalist economy,” [4]. Ford, however, believes that this economic crash is necessary for the population and government to accept drastic changes to the economic and political system [4].
