Police officers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety and security of the community. Their bravery, integrity and sheer commitment to the duty are unwavering as they serve to create order as well as the protection of lives and properties. They selflessly act in emergency situations, uphold law, respond to crimes and other forms of violence which is why the public continue to have their trust and confidence in them. But as individuals that whose job requires impeccable common sense and critical thinking, we tend to ask; should police officers required to have tertiary qualifications? While it seems obvious that professions like nursing would require a university degree, why it is not required from being a police officer to which the…
The literature I will be focusing on in my analysis is Seth Stoughton’s “Law Enforcement’s ‘Warrior’ Problem”, published in the Harvard Law Review journal on 10 April 2015. Stoughton explains how he believes policing is currently done. Which is with a “warrior” mentality that officers are trained to have and how that mentality negativity shapes how the police view, and interact with, civilians by making the officer view everyone as a threat and ensuring the officer requires unchallenged dominance and respect in every interaction. Stoughton says this has created a divide between police and civilians, which is detrimental to the safety of both police officers and civilians. Stoughton explains how he believes policing should be done, with a “guardian”…
Policy Recommendations: 1. Mandatory Reports of Police Use of Deadly Force cases and characteristics The FBI reports crime data on almost every crime committed in the United States yet there is no requirement for departments to report police use of deadly force statistics. A detailed database regarding police use of deadly force characteristics, demographics, and statistics should be instilled federally. This increase in factual evidence could shed light on just how many cases of deadly force have been used per year and under what circumstances (Loftin et al., 2003).…
Analytical Summary on the Use of Force by Police Among local, national, and international news broadcasts and online articles, the use of unwarranted force by American police officers is a reoccurring and controversial topic. For over two decades, growing amounts of cases of police brutality have brought a severe need for restructuring force implementation by authorities. Journalists, John Wihbey and Leighton Walter Kille, provide their collected data and studies on the subject in their online publication of Excessive or reasonable force by police? Research on law enforcement and racial conflict on JournalistsResource.org.…
Some requirements for state troopers may include a minimum age, specific training and physical capabilities. The police academy is a twelve to fourteen weeks in a training program in which police recruits go through the physical and mental challenges that will prepare them for day to day situations on the job site. Once they are in the academy they are taught skills in civil rights, traffic control, first aid, self-defense and the use of firearms. Every police officer must be shot by a Taser gun in the academy as well. The people who successfully complete the physical agility test will be invited to a written examination that same afternoon.…
Summary/Response Essay: Peace Officer As a result of technology advancing rapidly, police officers have access to more weapons than ever before. This has caused more police shootings and standoffs. Some police standoffs end without any harm but, most meet the expected fate of the civilian or civilians being killed or seriously injured and the police officers involved being killed or seriously injured. But, sometimes police officer related shootings are needed.…
There is no branch of public service where a man or women is so dependent upon their own intuition and resources than in police departments (Brereton, 1935). These men and women are subject to department policies, as well as the publics array of opinions and accusations. The use of force is a sensitive topic in todays society, where the public expects text–book strategies for deescalating confrontational scenarios. To police officers, use of force is a necessary part of the job, yet no one can predict when they will encounter a potentially life threatening scenario. The internal and external pressures placed on police officers are factors that often work against an individual.…
The potential use of police-worn body cameras has recently been an intense topic of discussion in Congress. With President Obama requesting $263 million (Dann and Rafferty) to fund the use of the equipment throughout U.S. police departments, many people are left wondering if they are worth the money. The small devices are meant to be worn by on-duty police officers to record their encounters. Is incorporating police-worn recording devices an excessive tactic in law enforcement or is it truly necessary? This is the question Congress has been dealing with recently.…
Things are completely different once they hit the streets after the police department hired them. Experienced officers known as field training officers (FTOs) train the new recruits during their probationary period. These new recruits are sometimes told to forget what they were taught at the academy and that their FTO will teach them what “real” police work is and how it is done (Malmin, 2012). The FTO will…
Police officers’ jobs are very stressful and require a large amount of attention to detail. This attention to detail can be diverted when an officer is not fully prepared for duty. For example, when I am in the academy I must be fully prepped the night before in order to have my morning to get dressed and eat breakfast. However, if I do not shine my boots the night before I would need to shine them in the morning. This would shorten my morning and the potential for me to miss breakfast and as a result not perform in Physical conditioning as well.…
Skills that are needed to take care of ourselves are diminishing. Reliance on high-tech gadgets allow people to get the answer without the necessary skills needed to get it. GPS, medical monitors and cell phones all contribute to the important skills diminishing. First, with GPS devices we no longer need to learn how to navigate or read a map. All you need is the address or coordinates for where you want to go and the GPS can give you directions and in some cases even navigate you, turn to turn.…
I cannot speak for the policemen of 1960s but I can speak from a future officers point of view when I say I know my job is to protect…
Arming pilots For many years the question has been asked, “is arming pilots a good idea?”. I personally believe that pilots should be but others may argue differently. The idea of arming pilots today isn’t a topic that was always thought of. As a matter of fact, the idea was proposed after the attacks on the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001.…
United States Army Basic Training Introduction The United States Army currently has an estimated amount of 500,000 plus people enlisted for active duty, disregarding the millions of men before. They all have completed the same process after enlistment, basic combat training. Basic combat training is the different phases that each civilian goes through to become a United States Army soldier.…
