The topic was addiction, and this paper will touch on the same topic; however, there will be a slight twist. The twist being this question: Is a habit an addiction? This question has been asked mainly regarding technology. However, this question can be extended over all habits. There is a common misconception by the public. Many people do not know what separates a habit from an addiction. Now, what is the answer to the question. Well, although a habit, while it is wired into the brain and it is a need to do something, isn’t an addiction because it isn’t always against someone’s well-being.
The first thing that allows something to be qualified as an addiction is that it must be against someone’s well-being. According to Steffan Jepson, a teenager who is around addiction, an addiction is anything that someone cannot stop doing and is against someone’s well-being. Drugs are considered against someone’s well-being because the “total overall costs of substance abuse in the United States, including productivity and health- and crime-related costs, exceed $600 billion annually” (“Understanding”).
