Final Draft Expansion of Instant Replay in the MLB
Baseball has always been an American pastime sport with very much history behind it. The sport of baseball can help us americans put aside our differences and come together to create a massive multi-million person fan base. This is a very close second of largest fan bases in america trailing right behind the NFL. According to the Gallup over 56% of americans today are Major League Baseball (MLB) fans stated by “Jones, Jeffery”. That is more than half of the American population including men women and children, the ones that are old enough to follow of course. Although baseball has a very strong history behind it, baseball also has a remarkably colorful background. …show more content…
"MLB Instant Replay"). With instant replay being added to the game it had the potential to lengthen and slow down the game even more. It wasn't until the instant replay system was actually active that we saw the flaws of baseball having one. Baseball is already an extremely long and slow paced game which does drive away a large fan base. Baseball recorded its average game time to be at two hours and 56 minutes! Well… that was up until instant replay was added into the mix. Ever since instant replay has been used, this year, the average game time is sitting at three hours and five minutes, almost 10 minutes longer than the average time before adding instant replay. Some believe the reason the time of a game has increased is because the team managers are outsmarting the system. One of the ways they are doing this is when a controversial call is made the manager will make a slow, leisurely walk out to the head umpire and have a civil conversation with him until he hears word from his own team’s replay system if the call is even worth challenging. Most of the time is not. The point being made here is that there is a pause in the game when the call isnt even being challenged! Another way the team managers are taking advantage of the new instant replay is because they are using up their challenges on non controversial calls. With instant replay, baseball is a game with nearly no human error leaving it all to the players to decide who wins the game. Nearly every call will be confirmed and corrected and all games will be called fairly. The negatives that come along with instant replay is a time length extension and some of baseball’s all time greatest moments not having the opportunity to recreate themselves. With no more manager ejections or controversial calls that fans can use as an aid for a loss, baseball losses some if its good traits. Only to improve on the game and add even better traits. Adding instant replay can even help create historical moments as well. If there was instant replay in 2010 Galarraga, the Detroit Tigers and the MLB would all have one more perfect game pitched written down in the books, but because of the umpires poor call late in the 9th inning it was stolen from him, his team and the league and was never considered to have ever happened. One last flaw that can be argued is although the MLB today has its constraints on which plays can be reviewed and which can not, what is telling us that the system will not be expanded again? When are balls and strikes going to be reviewable? This will all create more judgement calls which causes more frustration from the players, coaches, and fans. Overall the MLB definitely still has some work to do on instant replay, but if the MLB’s
