In the 21st century, it is common for people to suffer from mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Social media is the main cause of that (Lin et Al). According to TIME magazine, Instagram is the worst app for causing people to develop mental disorders. People scroll through instagram each day seeing posts of individuals who give the illusion of perfection. People then compare themselves to what they see. For example, Kylie Jenner will post an Instagram with plumped lips, showing off her abs, and her perfect skin. This will give the illusion that Kylie Jenner always look like that. However, in reality, the model had great lighting to help define her body and she had her makeup artists spend time enhancing her facial features. People

Instagram was released on October 6th, 2010 (Instagram). CEO Kevin Systrom and CTO Mike Krieger developed their app in San Francisco, California. “Systrom is responsible for the company's overall vision and strategy as well as day-to-day operations.” (Instagram). Krieger’s job can be described as “[...] the head of engineering, Mike focuses on building products that bring out the creativity in all of us.” (Instagram). Instagram’s name is a mixture of two words: “instant camera” and “telegram”. (Rakos). The article titled “The History of Instagram” written by Mikaela Rakos, stated that in 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $ 1 billion. Immediately after Facebook bought it, Instagram grew tremendously. “[..] use of Instagram skyrocketed. It reached 80 million monthly users after the acquisition and nearly doubled that to 150 million monthly users by the end of 2013.” (Rakos). Instagram’s stated that their purpose is to be a “[..] home for visual storytelling for everyone from celebrities, newsrooms and brands, to teens, musicians and anyone with a creative passion.” (Instagram).
