When working with couples of infidelity one could use the interpersonal model to establish forgiveness back into the relationship. The model was created to focus on forgiveness as the main component of this process in order to promote healing for the couples who decided to stay together after infidelity. Since infidelity causes damage to the trust and stability of a relationship, forgiveness is necessary. When treatment includes forgiveness, clients experience an increase in hope, self-esteem, self-forgiveness and positive thoughts toward the transgressor and a decrease in anger, anxiety, grief, negative thoughts and feelings, and depression (Fife, Weeks & Stellberg-Filbert, 2013).
