The dowry system is a cultural practice that perpetuates the oppression, torture, and murder of women (Banerjee 34). Dowry practice also give birth to other evil causes like, discrimination against female child in form of infanticide and sex-selection abortions, domestic violence killings called as ‘ dowry death’ , mental and physical illness of women. India is a country where people prefer having boy child more rather than a girl child because of some religious myth. The female children is only consider as an economic problem for family. Moreover this result into gender discrimination in terms of education opportunity, health issues, proper treatment to illness and moreover sometimes it also lead to female killing. Although foeticide and abortion is against law in India but people still do it illegally due to which female births are not recorded as normally or willingly as male births. Furthermore dowry is also related to domestic violence against brides done by her husband or husband’s family members either due to punishment of not bringing enough dowry at time of marriage or failing to fulfill the continuous demand of groom’s family for more dowry even after marriage. There are some factor responsible for continuity of this practice .To begin with, the deep rooted patriarchal system of country have made Indian women dependent on their husband. Secondly, marriage is a social necessity in Hindu culture ,therefore an unmarried boy or girl is consider as misfortune for families due to which families strive to marry off their children at any cost. Further the belief of “no dowry, no marriage” is so deep rooted in Indian culture that people thinks matrimonial security or happiness is not possible without dowry. Thirdly, an increase in greed of people for materialistic and consumer goods in modern India, lead to see marriages as easy and instant way of obtaining wealth. Lastly, the loopholes in government’s laws prohibiting dowry practice encourage people to continue this practice. Despite of having acknowledgment about how dowry practice demolishes the social value and give negative outcome to society, it is still persistent in today’s world. To sum up, dowry system is a ritual which is followed since ancient time and is also complex problem for developing India as it hinders the growth of country.
