Dubose, an elderly woman, tries her best to combat her morphine addiction, even though she knows she cannot succeed. Furthermore, Mrs. Dubose has her neighbor, Jem Finch, come over to read her many novels as a punishment for destroying her flowers and, more specifically, to distract her from taking drugs. Jem dreads the task, obligated by his father, of reading books to her because he despises her rude nature. Furthermore, Jem asks Atticus why he has to read to her. In response Atticus says, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do”(Lee 149). Although knowing her battle against morphine was long over, Mrs. Dubose still perseveres in trying to rid herself of her addiction. Additionally, this proves that with bravery comes the risk of failure because she tries her best to fight her addiction even though she is unsuccessful. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Mrs. Dubose tries her best to fight her deleterious drug addiction despite knowing the high risk of failure. Adding on, Atticus defends Tom Robinson knowing the chances of success are low. Furthermore, Atticus does not allow the judgments of others waiver his stance on Tom Robinson’s case. Atticus and Mrs. Dubose both display bravery by doing what they felt was the right thing to do. Similarly, Rosa parks, like Atticus and Mrs. Dubose, displays bravery by not giving up her seat to a white man despite the consequences she might receive.
