In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, true courage is shown by Atticus. Atticus is a great role model; he is a highly respected person throughout the novel. He is a very good citizen and instills very good values to his kids Jem and Scout. Atticus shows lots of courage in the novel. Firstly, some courageous acts of Atticus are that he took the case of defending Tom Robinson even though he knew he was going to lose the trial. Scout was referring to how her and Jem always thought of Atticus as old since he doesn’t do anything much and were kind of ashamed. Also in this quote Atticus knew the consequences of him missing and was still brave enough to shoot. Another quote is what Miss Maudie told the kids about Atticus saying “Forgot to tell you the other day besides playing the Jew’s harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot Maycomb County in his time” (Lee 129). Not only did Miss Maudie point out that after Atticus shoot the dog there was nothing for Scout nor Jem to have been ashamed of, but showed them that Atticus is brave and shoots only when he has to. Also, when Jem asked Miss Maudie about why Atticus hasn’t told him about him hunting she answers, “If your father’s anything he’s civilized in his heart.
