Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

Having the ability to do something that may frighten another person is a strong trait. Not just anybody can claim they have the courage to do something whether it's standing in front of class and reading or sticking up for a kid who is getting bullied. To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee consists of multiple moments where a character is being courageous, however Atticus Finch beholds the most courageous acts in the book. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and father to Jem and Scout, takes upon numerous acts of courage from shooting a mad dog to defending an African American male accused of rape during a time where cruel racism was common. Tom Robinson is falsely accused of rape and Atticus defends him in court no matter what anybody in Maycomb thought about it. Atticus knows he has no chance with winning the case, but to him trying is all that matters. For example, Most citizens of Maycomb consider Atticus a “Nigger-lover” for it and they refuse to agree that he should defend Tom but of course this doesn't stop him. Atticus explains, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 78). Here, what can be seen is that racism was so strong at this time and black people had no rights but it didn't stop Atticus from putting in all his effort. Atticus defends tom because he knows it's the right thing to do, even if it is making him the talk of the town. Being able to survive all the hate through the trial made atticus a stronger person and shows the amount of courage he carries. Atticus Finch holds the title of having the most courage in To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee through all of the brave acts he has partaken in. He was never frightened by doing anything even if it made the whole town look at him like he was crazy. A man who can go from being a dull lawyer to a remarkable hero is truly amazing.
