Instead of Killing Mockingbirds, Let’s Show Some Courage Courage in the 1930s before cell phones and computers is very different than courage in modern times. Children back then could show back then courage by touching a building instead of posting a status about standing up against something. Most people if they saw a burning building would not walk in to grab something, they would pick up their phones and dial 911. In the town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. There are many characters showing and even learning about courage. In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem, Scout, and Atticus show courage in childlike, and adult ways. There are many ways to define and show courage. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, she defines her own form of courage …show more content…
Atticus defends Tom Robinson in court, Tom is a black man accused of raping a white girl. The time and place the story takes place is in the 1930s in Alabama. Atticus knowns the whole town is against him defending Tom. Even though the odds are against him, he will not give up the case. Atticus knows Tom is innocent but does not believe that they have any chance of winning the case. He is going to defend Tom anyways no matter what the odds may be (Lee 75). When there is a rabid dog in Maycomb it may be Atticus to the rescue. Atticus was known as “One Shot Finch” because he was a very good gun shooter. When sheriff Heck Tate arrives on the scene he is too scared to take the shot because he does not want to hit the Radley House. He hands the gun to Atticus so Atticus takes the shot and kills the dog (96). Miss Maudie felt that Atticus never told his kids Scout and Jem about him being a good shooter because “. . . shooin’s different from playing the piano or it like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over the most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot until he had to, and he had to today.” (98). When it snows in Alabama, and people start turning on the heat, there may be a disaster. Miss Maudie loses her house in a fire trying to keep her plants warm from the cold. Mr. Avery went into the house when it was on fire, went to the top floor and just started chucking things out of the window. Atticus showed real courage by going inside and getting what meant most to her (69). Courage in the modern times is similar to what Harper Lee depicts as
