Cultivation Theory suggests that the repeated and heavy usage of the media cultivates perceptions of reality that is congruent with what the viewer sees in the media (Dominick 436). The Cultivation Theory is said to be “a theory of story-telling”, assuming that exposure to a set of messages will have the likelihood of producing agreement with the audience (Kwansah-Aidoo et.al 50). As the media presents repeated and heavy exposure of certain issues, it subtly influences the public’s idea and perceptions. This was seen in the movie when the media had only presented the public with footages and stories of the ‘miserable life’ Diana had with the royal family. The media had portrayed the Royal Family, especially the Queen in a negative manner. From this, was the Mean World Syndrome due to the repeated coverage and harsh headlines, the public viewed the Royal Family to be uncaring and cold towards the death of Diana and there was a belief that it was because of the Royal Family that Diana was driven to her early demise, resulting in the Royal Family’s popularity to drastically plummet.
