This quality improvement project for achieving the NPSG Six implementation of the clinical alarm management project involved two phases. The first phase began in 2014 with leadership commitment to alarm safety and accomplishing the goal and placing the patient safety nurses as the project leaders. The chief nurse officers assigned clinical representatives for each area of service and the clinical engineers completed a comprehensive inventory of the alarms systems. The second phase included specific strategies detailing alarm management by creating policies and preparing to implement new practices to enhance the safe. The project steps moving through 2015 mirrored the steps in TJC NPSG and using the AH Organization’s performance improvement process, plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle. In addition to TJC tool and the PDCA cycle, the AH Organization has an operational excellence approach that follows the lean …show more content…
The patient safety team worked with the Interprofessional education team and created a web based self-learning module. Meeting times were established to discuss literature on alarm management and create the test. Measurement of success was the online attendance and completion record and test scores for the program.
Step Six
Local work groups were to update the tools with the NPSG questions. The Excel grid was to establish the current snap shot of alarm devices and how they are managed according to the goal with the understanding that as new devices are added or field of evidence changes, subsequent updates to policies and the grid will be required.
Rationale. The patient safety team in collaboration with the Chief Nurse of each facility established hospital teams who would be responsible for determining the need for development of new or the amendment of existing policies and procedures. Physicians, nurses, clinical engineers, respiratory therapists that practice in particular service line settings are examples of typical members of the facilities’
