For more than a century immigration has been a crucial part of the United States foundation, according to 2016 census U.S. Population only has 5% percent of today 's world population and an estimate of 20% percent of the 214 million international migrants around the world live in the United States. This shows that the U.S. is the world 's leading attraction for immigrants. People leave their countries to pursue opportunities they might not of had for a number of reasons, however the most popular motive for traveling to the United States is for employment. As of today immigrants represent one in eight of U.S. Residents and many of them are in the top percentile of the American knowledge based economy. According to evidence discovered by authors Somerville W and Sumption M from the book, “Immigration and the labor market: Theory, evidence and policy.” A quarter of immigrants are physicians, a third are computer specialists, a fifth are professors , and a quarter of founders of high tech companies are immigrant. This study clearly shows that immigrants are enhancing the competitiveness of the job market. Immigrants are also on the bottom end of the job market as well one third of immigrants that are 25 and older never finish high school. These immigrants often have occupations that don 't require skill such as construction, service, or manufacturing. Many argue that less skilled workers negatively impact the job market , but research proves the jobs that these type of skilled immigrants take are passed up by native born Americans anyways. Economy, what are we doing as a nation to help immigrants become citizens? According to information gathered from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) a person can apply for derived or acquired citizenship through parents that are U.S. Citizens. There are two possible ways to obtain citizenship before the age 18. Citizenship can be obtained through the genetic father, the genetic mother, or if necessary the non genetic gestational mother, meaning the legal parent at the time of birth under law of relevant jurisdiction. Immigrants also have the option to apply for naturalization. A person taking this route would need to file form N-400. Prior to filing, USCIS states that the applicant must meet all of the following requirements: they must be at least 18 years of age at the time of filing except active duty members of U.S. Armed forces , they must be a resident of United States for three years, must have lived within state residence for at least 3 months, must demonstrate good moral character, also demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution, display a basic knowledge of U.S. History and government, showcase their ability to read, write, speak , and understand basic English, lastly take an oath of allegiance to the United States.
