In today’s society, most schools, both elementary and secondary, don’t discuss Asian or even Asian American History. African American, Native American and even European histories are all extensively covered in history classes. Many students have at least some knowledge of African American slavery, forced cultural assimilation of Native Americans, and the civil rights movement. From an early age, children are taught that the U.S. is a country created by immigrants; however, American history classes have shown a trend of teaching that excludes Asian Americans from the history of this country. At most, the topic of Asian American history is lightly touched, only introducing San Francisco Chinatowns or the large influx of Asian immigrants looking…
Author of nonfiction book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall”, Anne Fadiman relays the questions to her readers in her preface: “What makes a good parent?” and “What makes a good doctor?” As far as anyone is concerned for the latter question, specifically what makes outstanding health care, Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality would describe quality health care as simply “getting the right care to the right patient at the right time – every time” (). Furthermore, she dissects this simplistic description apart, providing a multilayered perspective. Essentially, the key to quality health care is its three basic dimensions: STRUCTURE, PROCESS, and OUTCOME” ().…
Sometimes, in situations of great danger, one must abandon their compassion towards others to survive. This is a human instinct, abandoning a usually vital part of their lives to secure the rest of it. So yes, sometimes people have to abandon compassion to survive a horrible situation. In the book, on page 26, multiple people on the train car to Birkenau abandon their compassion to make their situations better and more peaceful.…
So I went the artist Andrea Mantenga who painted the lamentation over the dead christ which can be found on the pg 91 of our textbook. The focal point in this picture as we all can see is the dead jesus that is laying down. The artist by making him the largest component in the painting made him the focal point. The photo me is asymmetrical because the dead jesus is taking up most the photo and everything just works around it. the picture foreground is the man lying on the bed.…
Authors when describing their characters can either be very exaggerated with their characters or actually make them seem unstated throughout the whole story. Sometimes two stories that have similar characters express their identities in completely different ways. This happens between the short stories “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin. The protagonist Jackson squared in “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” his identity is expressed in such a manner that you feel like the author wanted to display to the readers that this guy was no good. While the author for “Sonny’s Blues” kept his protagonist simple and let the story focus on Sonny and how the brother wanted to reconnect with Sonny.…
It is a guide for women to break out of their comfort zone of just being a housewife who obey their husbands. This book goes against “the Ohio Supreme Court, [which] held that a wife was ‘at most a superior servant to her husband’” (Foner, 1004). I also believe that the reason why this novel was so popular was because it gave a different perspective to women. It also was a big push toward a feminist movement that occurred during the 1960’s.…
A Father’s Forgiveness: How Archetypes Can Affect How A Character Forgives Understanding and wisdom are key aspects of forgiveness. In literature, archetypal god-teachers and father figures possess these traits, which allow them to overcome hardships and be able to forgive. In Medicine Walk by Richard Wagamese, the characteristics of a god-teacher and the traits of a father figure allow a character who possesses these attributes to overcome grief and anger to progress in their internal strength. This leads to acceptance of past wrongs, ultimately paving way for forgiveness.…
I personally loved this book, All We Have Is Now by Lisa Schroeder, because of the characters personalities. Another reason is because of the adventure and surviving. there was a lot of adventure, trying to survive and romance. For example, Vince is a teen who won’t give up.…

This excerpt demonstrates the significant and the strong connection between Janie and nature. Indeed, the seeds here does not only remind her of her beloved husband, Tea Cake or they just symbolize his living spirit, but also they reflect her sexual awareness, her feminine identity, and her searching for self-fulfillment. From the beginning of the novel until its ending, Janie shows her admiration to the vegetation life especially the tree and its leafs, roots, and seeds. When Janie was only 16 years old, she climbs the pear tree in her grandmother’s backyard and she becomes so astonished by the beautiful picture of a bee on the blossom of the blooming pear tree.…
Faith is Power Faith is not something that one can see or touch, but it is still something that one can have. In the book All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, the protagonists Marie-Laure and her father, Monsieur LeBlanc, have to suddenly flee Paris to a safer town, Saint-Malo, because of the beginning of World War II. Not only do they have to travel all the way to Saint-Malo, but Monsieur LeBlanc has to carry a diamond that may or may not be the famous Sea of Flames diamond and Marie is completely blind.…
Without background information some readers may think that all of these different elements of the story shape it into a piece of literature that emphasizes the problems during the nineteenth century for women, but when they learn that there were other elements that affect the story as well the theme of this piece is…
At the time women were oppressed in almost every way the expectation was that a girl should marry by her early 20s, start a family and then dedicate her life to domestic duties. As Stephanie Coontz, a writer of the time, put it, "The female doesn 't really expect a lot from life. She 's here as someone 's keeper — her husband 's or her children 's." Women were at the mercy…
“Love is Not All” is a sonnet written by Edna St. Vincent Millay regarding a personal message directing the question of value and intensity of genuine love. This fourteen-line sonnet exploits both Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnet designs. In most Shakespearean sonnets, the turn takes place between the twelfth and thirteenth lines, but the turn in “Love is Not All” does not. Millay’s poem shows a turn after the octave (happens in Petrarchan sonnets), making it a split into two cases or topics. The first eight lines, or octave, introduces that love is not all it is sought out to be, whereas the last six lines, or the sestet, shows a new thought and the speaker’s feelings regarding love.…
For a long period of time, our society was accustomed and perhaps encouraged to maintain a certain level of secrecy regarding many components of our society. It was not acceptable to openly condemn and express personal opinions about topics, such as, women rights, religion, and politics. However, during the enlightenment, in the seventeenth century, there was a slight change. Authors such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Moliere, deliberately expressed their concerns about this “controversial” topics, through their literary work. For one, Mary Wollstonecraft, in 1776 published, A vindication of the right of women.…
