Maintaining control over a room of thirty adolescents is a challenge within itself. Being an effective teacher to these students, requires a special skill set. In order to best address all their students’ needs, teachers should offer a variety of teaching methods and assessments. Because there are hundreds of factors influencing the lesson each day, a teacher must plan for the known and anticipate the unknown. This can include preparing an optimal learning environment and creating structured lesson plans. Although planning is important, there is a limit to how prepared a teacher could possibly be. At the very basis of planning is creating a positive classroom environment. Ideal classrooms provide a realm of safety because the last place a student should feel scared is in their classroom. Emotional health plays a role in learning, and if a student is preoccupied with fear of verbal or physical abuse, his or her learning is inhibited. In addition, classrooms should be designed for minimal distractions. For example, students should not face the window or have access to non-educational technology. Another very important step to planning is aligning the curriculum to meet state standards. Consider objectives as a tiered system with each feeding into each other. Assessment goals work to evaluate classroom objectives. Meanwhile, classroom objectives combine to accomplish state standards. If a teacher aligns all the standards, students will be able to meet small standards that accumulate into meeting large standards. Because humans are unpredictable, teachers must be adaptable. Sick students and hazardous weather cause for cancelled classes. If a teacher seems panicked about scheduling lessons, it adds unneeded stress to the students. Therefore, teachers need to adjust their schedules seamlessly, while still maintaining standards. Furthermore, teachers have to be adaptable in their teaching styles. Through formative assessments, teachers can measure the success of their lesson and then make an informed decision on how to continue the lesson. Students may not understand material as thoroughly as expected, so a teacher may choose to review the same lesson again. With that, a teacher may have to adjust their instructional methods to reach the students the second time. Additionally, teachers must make accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities. Teachers need to be able to figure out a way to level the playing field for a student, while still maintaining the same educational goals. Teaching students with disabilities requires teachers to constantly adjust the lessons and assessments to enable learning. Teachers need to be aware of their students’ circumstances and make adjustments accordingly to create a less stressful learning
