Case Background:
Icy foods established in 1999 and began manufacturing frozen ready-meals. Initially the company was growing rapidly, however it was led on an informal basis. Operations were loosely divided. Employees were encouraged for multi skill training and open-door policy was followed. However, when the new management took over the company achieved its targets but the employee motivation decreased heavily over time due to the new policies.
Maslow Theory:
Maslow was a psychologist, he formed a theory suggesting that humans have to satisfy 5 basic need and through these basic need we, as humans, can be motivated. Furthermore, he arranged these needs in a hierarchy with physiological needs at the bottom and self actualisation right at the

Employees whose needs of the lowest level have not been met will make decision about taking up a job based on the satisfaction of basic needs.
Once these basic needs have been met, the employees will be looking into satisfying their social need such as making friends and building the sense of belongingness. At Icy Foods this can be achieved by creating welcoming culture. Social needs include the need for having good friends and this can be achieved by allowing the staff some time where they have zero work load and during this time they can engage with other staff, this can be arranged during working hours or even after. However, the freedom to socialise holds both advantages and disadvantages; some employees may work better due to improved relationships hence increasing productivity but same, if they do not fit into the social circles, become dissatisfied. Communication is key when it comes to motivating a staff that has been bombarded with strict targets and policies. Regularly informing staff (through managers) in regards to operational matter is a key component of the social needs level as it induces a sense of belongingness. Employees who are not informed of these matters may consider themselves to be disliked which may (and most likely will) lead them to become demotivated.

Rewarding staff publicly and setting challenges can help in satisfying their esteem needs. By rewarding staff publicly their confidence will prosper and upon successfully completing challenges the employees can gather an increase in their reputation.
