The film Cast Away does a great job of exhibiting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. For most of the duration of the film, we watch Chuck struggle with establishing the 1st and 2nd needs of the hierarchy. The first need being breathing, food, water etc. The second being the security of property, resources, health and mortality. Chuck collects resources, builds a shelter and hunts for food. All to avoid being vulnerable to predators and negatively susceptible to his new environment. Just as I live in a house and I eat food. Chuck’s need for love and belonging, self-acceptance and respect from others seems to further. This is a combination of the 3rd 4th and 5th needs of the hierarchy. As Chuck shows us in the scene when he arrives at the UPS headquarters. Just like I strive to push myself and satisfy my need to create things.
I agree with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs on a certain level. I believe that these circumstances might heavily influence an individual into becoming motivated. But I think that being motivated is subjective to the entity. Even with only the 1st level of needs being met you have the choice to be creative and successful in some aspects of life. It's simply minding over matter. There are people who are barely achieving the first and second needs of the hierarchy and seem content with life. And I see people fulfilling all of the levels of needs and they are unsatisfied.
Your philosophy is just as important as you shelter. Making the choice of how you perceive the world and how you will live in it dictates more than fate. What if Chuck decided to give up when his lifeboat was stuck in the rubble? What if he went through with suicide? What if he never tried to leave the island? His choices, his personality and his mindset where what brought him back to ultimate safety. It was not a matter of his environment or his situation. If there is a will there is a way. I think it’s as simple as
