Iago and Babo use manipulation to gain power from the other characters, these other’s trust them because of their previous bias. Trust based on bias makes you more susceptible to this manipulation, which can put other people in danger. In Othello, Iago’s past experiences with characters create trust making his lies seem believable. From the beginning of the play, Roderigo already believes Iago’s lies because they are old war friends. When Iago tells him that Othello, Desdemona, and Cassio are moving to Cyprus because of the war he says “Thou art sure of me. Go, make money. I have told thee often, [...] I hate the Moor. My cause is hearted; thine hath no less reason” (53). Iago is convincing Roderigo that the only way for him to win Desdemona’s heart is to follow her to Cyprus. Although Roderigo thinks this is not a good idea, he is soon persuaded by Iago who makes himself seem trustworthy because of his confidence in the matter. Because of their past together, Roderigo trusts Iago almost instantly. They had each other’s backs during the war, and Roderigo reasons that it shouldn’t be any different now. Because of this trust, later Roderigo eventually attempts to kill Cassio because Iago seems to know what is best. Later in the play, Cassio and Desdemona are having a conversation about getting him reinstated, when Othello and Iago approach, Cassio exits quickly.
