I was sitting on my father’s lap when I heard the news that would change my family forever. “We interrupt your broadcast to bring you news from Manhattan. There is panic on Wall Street as hundreds of people swarm the sidewalks. As of now, it is reported that over sixteen million stocks have been sold in the past weak creating…” (Ayers 677). Time seemed to slow as my father placed me on the floor and abruptly unplugged the radio, not wanting to hear the remainder of the news report. He started pacing the room, mumbling to himself, “We sold half the stocks last week, but what about the others?” My mother heard the commotion from upstairs and hurried down. “James, what’s happening?” she asked as though she could tell by his demeanor that the answer would be devastating. “Oh God, we’re ruined,” he whispered. “What do you mean?” my mother questioned hesitantly. “The stock market crashed, Martha,” he yelled. “Oh God!” she echoed as fear overwhelmed her. Nothing in our home has been the same since that dreadful Tuesday. My parents have become eerily quiet and only speak when they must. Mary Ellen, my nanny, stopped visiting me, and I can’t figure out why. I asked my mom where she went, but she just responded with a sad look and a soft pat on my shoulder. Robert, our cook, also stopped coming to the house. I restrained myself from asking my mom about his whereabouts because she seemed so depressed.
