Personal Narrative: How Adversity Changed My Life

Improved Essays
My freshman year flew by with ease. I made many friends and did well in class. We only had our final exams left before summer would begin. It was warm outside, and everyone was in good spirits.
On June 3, 2015, PJ killed himself. We had taken our first three exams, and after going home to study for my Honors Chemistry final, a text from my classmate, Matt, popped up on my screen announcing his death. I had known PJ Purcell for six years, and had gone to school with him since 4th grade. We sat in countless classrooms and played on a few sports teams together. We weren’t super close, but I talked to him nearly everyday and he was my friend and teammate. The news shocked me like nothing had before, and I was unable to focus on anything else.

From tragic events like losing a friend to meaningless issues such as missing a free throw on the basketball court, I have never let hardship change my attitude or the way I live my life. I always respond to adversity positively. For the first few games of my junior basketball season, I didn’t get off the bench. A few of my teammates in similar situations responded by being resentful toward our coach, lazy in practice, and unsupportive toward those playing. Although I agreed that bench-warming after training hard in the off-season was frustrating, I saw it as a challenge and opportunity to improve. My confidence stayed high, and I worked harder in practice. I cheered for my teammates and did everything my coach asked. Eventually, I began to get more reps in practice and a few varsity minutes. Two weeks later, after keeping up my hard work and positive attitude, I found myself in the starting lineup. Instead of letting my lack of playing time bring me down, I collected myself and achieved my goal. When a challenging situation presents itself to me, I am never discouraged. I always put effort into actively responding to adversity, rather than being a bystander to my own problems. Whether it’s on the court, in the classroom, or at home with my family, I know that I can solve even the hardest

Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. It was a gloomy day from it being so cloudy and cold. I was talked into walking home during school by friends whom, at the time didn't care about school as much as I did, cared nothing of school. I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

Knowing that my parents were back in Arizona and I was there all alone with no family.…

Maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength; that my pain was my motivation. Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a God given gift, and not something I worked for every single day of my life. Maybe I destroyed the game. (They show the young players listening to Jordan) Or maybe you’re just making excuses.”…

Deputy Chief Michael Beckman of the Long Beach Police spoke with us about his son’s suicide. The talk was both heart wrenching and informative and I give him a lot of credit to be able to speak with anyone about such a personal issue. This is not something I could or would want to talk about with anyone. He started his talk stating we were all brothers and sisters in law enforcement and he uses this time as therapy for him in dealing with the loss of his son.…

During those times I realized that I am built for this. It was during the hard times that I thought about all of my failures in life. All the times I missed notes, missed baskets, or didn’t hit the ball over the net. More importantly I thought about my intentionality and purpose during those moments I realized that all of the little lessons I learned while participating in all of these activities would add up and lead to greater opportunities. Opportunities to improve, to learn, to grow, but more importantly to become a better person.…

The season was off to a rough start before it even started; our team was very inexperienced because we graduated thirteen seniors and five other players quit. A majority of the players were two so we were starting from square one. Nonetheless, I was optimistic and determined. As the only senior, and one of three upperclassman, I had been playing the longest and was determined that I would be able to lead the team to greatness. I was disappointed when we did not, but I did not let it stop me from trying.…

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…
