Hydrazine (N2H4) is a colorless, oily liquid that has an odor similar to ammonia. Other names for Hydrazine include Diamine, Nitrogen hydride, Diazine, and Levoxine. Its molecular weight is 32.05 g/mol and it is miscible in water. Its boiling point is 113.5 degrees Celsius at 760 mm Hg and its melting point is 2.0 degrees Celsius. Most people can smell hydrazine when present at concentrations of 2.0–8.0 parts per million (Choudhary G). “It is known for its corrosive and strong reducing properties” (Makarovsky, Markel and Dushnitsky). “The chemical and its derivatives are highly flammable” (Makarovsky, Markel and Dushnitsky). “Hydrazine has been used as fuel for many rockets and spacecraft, including the space shuttle. Hydrazine is used to treat boiler water to reduce corrosion, to reduce other chemicals, and to bring about or speed up chemical reactions. It is also used as a medicine and to make other medicines, farm chemicals, and plastic foams” (Choudhary G). …show more content…
If there is a chance that any clothing has been contaminated with Hydrazine it should not leave the workplace. When using Hydrazine, there should be no eating, drinking, or smoking. It should be kept away from any source of heat, open flames, and sparks. Hydrazine should be used in an area that is well ventilated and it should not come into contact with skin and should not be inhaled or ingested. Any exposed skin, the hands, and the face should be washed thoroughly after handling
