Hybrid Vehicles

A hybrid vehicle uses two or more distinct types of power, such as internal combustion engine and electric motor. While there are many types of hybrid vehicles, this paper will mainly focus on hybrid electric vehicles. Hybrid cars are a combination of electric and gas powered engines, and combine the best of both to be much more practical than just a simple gas powered or fully electric car. In the world today there are hundreds of ways to travel, like trains, planes, boats and cars. The most common way of travel in the world today is by car, easily shown by the statistic of the world has approximately one billion vehicles on the road (fueleconomy.gov). In the U.S. alone there are two hundred fifty three million cars and trucks on the road. …show more content…
Hybrids are the most fuel efficient, cost productive, low emissions, and low repair cost. Although electric cars can go one hundred or two hundred miles at the time, it take almost six to eight hours to recharge your car battery. The battery of an electric car can usually only be recharged one to two thousand times and are generally extremely expensive to replace. Traditional gas-powered cars are time-tested and work fine for anyone; however, on average most of them only get around twenty four miles to the gallon. The lack of efficiency may start to be a real pain if a great deal of traveling is required since constantly having to stop and fill up with gas will be commonplace. Hybrid electric vehicles, on the other hand, provide the best of both worlds. The cars are equipped with a battery to provide power in-place of a traditional gas engine—like an electric car—but the hybrid still comes with an internal combustion engine to ensure the car can keep driving with a dead battery; all while recharging the dead battery. It is a great deal more convenient to recharge a battery while driving than to find a charge spot and wait the eight hours to …show more content…
Manufacturers have stepped up to the challenge of making a much more environmentally friendly fossil fuel automobile. The focus has been aimed towards preventing greenhouse gases, more specifically nitrous oxide emissions because of its correlation to smog production. Two key components have been added to the exhaust system of gas powered engines to prevent greenhouse gas: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) devices, and the Catalytic Converter. The EGR valve opens from back pressure from the car 's exhaust and channels it back into the combustion chamber combining the exhaust with intake air, the amount of oxygen in the mixture is reduced and its combustibility is also decreased, which causes fuel to burn at a lower temperature and produces less nitrous oxide (Lampton). In addition to the EGR circuit is the catalytic converter, “the job of the catalytic converter is to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they ever leave the car’s exhaust system” (Nice). The catalytic converter is a metal box lined with metal such as platinum, gold, or rhodium. As the name implies, the catalytic converter acts as a catalyst to increase the rate at which pollution is removed with two different types of catalysts. The first stage of the catalytic converter is the reduction catalyst which uses a catalyst to rip nitrogen atoms from the molecule, therefore reducing nitrous oxide

Electric cars only run on one battery, there is no internal combustion engine, muffler, gasoline tank, air or fuel filters, or any other parts needed to run a gasoline powered car. There are no tailpipe emissions, it creates fewer greenhouse gases, and they are cheaper to fuel per mile, 2 cents per mile compared to 12 cents per mile. Electric cars drive shorter distance, they only go 100 miles compared to 300 miles, and are not easy to operate. It takes hours to recharge an electric vehicle compared to minutes to refuel There are safety concerns associated with using a lithium-ion battery, as lithium is a highly reactive material prone to explosion (Schroeder, R. In response to tighter standards, manufacturers equipped new cars with even more sophisticated emission control systems. These systems generally include a new catalyst, plus an on board computer and oxygen sensor. This equipment helps optimize the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Efforts by government and industry since 1970 have greatly reduced typical vehicle emissions.…

The future of car engines In October 1973 the oil crisis began "when the members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) proclaimed an oil embargo" (Wikipedia, n.d.). This action was in response to the United States supplying weapons to Israel in their war against Syria and Egypt, which was called the Yom Kippur war. As a result of this embargo, the United States passed a law called the "Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)", the purpose of which was to "reduce energy consumption by increasing the fuel economy of cars and light trucks" (NHTSA, n.d.). This legislation remains impactful to the future of automakers.…

In contrast, competition from other auto maker such as Chevy, Ford, Honda and Toyota are becoming equally as competitive as Nissan hybrids. The high price of replacing the battery is a drawback if it fails. Including the difficult task of trying to replace it at home, that is nearly impossible without the proper technology and tools. The lack of battery charging stations in operation along the interstate makes it extremely hard to plan long trips across the state without stopping to recharge the vehicle. Not know what available power source is available away from home is also a draw as the power cord has to have the right head on the end of the card and fit the device at charging stations.…

A major improvement in cutting down car emissions is the hybrid car. These types of cars produce very low emissions compared to the average car. This is because the hybrid cars either run on electricity alone or both electricity and fuel. Either way they are both ecofriendly and are cheaper to use and buy than the average car. • Natural gas- is a domestically produced gaseous fuel, and whether produced via conventional or renewable methods, this clean-burning alternative fuel must be compressed or liquefied for use in vehicles.…

Compared to the late sixties American muscle cars that our grandparents and parents grew up with we are starting to see a consumer trend towards the smaller carbon foot print. While electric cars have been in existent for a couple hundred years now, they have never been as consumer friendly as they are today (Electric Auto Association, 2016). Although electric cars still have limitations there are many more consumers willing to live with those limitations than ever before. Electric car sales are still at less than one percent of auto sales monthly but that number is consistently climbing, even with low gasoline prices. I would certainly own an electric car but the overall cost and limitations of an electric car would greatly impact my life.…
