Should The United States Use Natural Gas Vehicles?

One solution to reduce traffic –related air pollution is to use natural gas vehicles. According to U.S. department of energy there are about 150,000 vehicles in the Unites states and approximate 15.2 million vehicles worldwide powered by natural gas. Natural gas vehicles, which can run on compressed natural gas (CNG), are good choice for high mileage. Natural gas vehicles generally emit 13-21 % fewer greenhouse gas emissions than comparable gasoline and diesel vehicles. CNG is considered alternative fuel under the Energy Policy Act of1992. At present, the United States is considerably behind countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Italy, and India, and ranks 14th globally in number of NGVs on the road. Currently, about 12-15% of public transit buses in the U.S. run on natural gas . States with the highest consumption of natural gas for transportation are California, New York, Texas, Georgia, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
In this solution, using a CNG vehicles will be environment friendly and low running cost as CNG costs lesser than other fuel cost.
