The data gathered lends support to Maslow’s theory that individuals seek safety at their place of employment. Maslow used the word “safety” to mean more than just physical safety. While he used it to encase physical safety as well as economic, vocational, psychological security they all fall underneath this second tier of human needs. It is now important for employers to provide acceptable and comfortable workplace for their employees, otherwise discomfort to said employees might be caused. Brill (1992) estimates that improvements in the physical design of the workplace may result in a five (5) to ten (10) percent increase in employee productivity.

Managers, for example, can benefit from understanding their employees’ basic human needs of friendship, job security, safety and recognition for a task well done. The author failed to mention that the need to have a proper work environment goes hand in hand with the other needs in Maslow’s pyramid. He failed to bring to light that both extrinsic (a pleasing work environment) and intrinsic (personal needs and values) have to be met and work hand in hand to be able to get the most of the employees in the …show more content…
There are various ways in which both employers and employees can make the working environment attractive to and functional. These are as follows 1) Workers can make their personal workspace look attractive to them by trying the following adding photos, posters, postcards, flowers, knick knacks, toys, statues, plaque cards and artwork. 2) This is a very important point and it is usually looked over, clearing out the clutter. Many people notice a dramatic improvement to their productivity when they organize their workspace. It is easier to be more functional when everything has a place and it is easy to locate. For the individuals that enjoy the outdoors being stuck in an office most times without an outside view can be somewhat frustrating. In order to curb this the employee can try to bring some nature into his work environment by adding some plants to his workspace, and he will find himself enjoying the environment much more. It is necessary that the management understand that the work environment can and greatly affect employee morale. A bleak office lacking a pleasant work environment and proper light and colour can cause depression and a lack of motivation in employees. This can be easily remedied by the employers simply adding a cheerful yet soothing paint job to brighten up the place, also by placing green plants and tasteful artwork around the office.
