Whether or not mosquitoes should be extinguished is a very controversial topic. Many believe that mosquitoes have an important role in the food web and also in the ecosystem, while others see them as animals that carry multiple diseases and are just annoying. As stated by the American Mosquito Control Association “Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism -- over one million people worldwide die from mosquito-borne diseases every year”. Mosquitoes should be eliminated because they carry and spread various life threatening diseases, attack and diminish the human population in certain countries and do not have any real purpose in the food web. Life threatening diseases such as Malaria, Chikungunya, Dog Heartworm , Dengue, Yellow Fever, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, LaCrosse Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, West Nile Virus and Zika Virus (American Mosquito Control Association) are just some of the many diseases that mosquitoes carry. Some of these diseases are mostly known for their higher rate of people who have been infected with it. Diseases like Malaria, Zika Virus, Yellow Fever and the West Nile Virus are some of the more well-known ones, but there are many more that make the same impact.
