Mosquitoes are among the most dangerous living creatures when it comes to the number of deaths they cause worldwide. Their ability to carry diseases and transmit them to humans causes thousands of deaths each year and in 2015 alone, malaria was responsible for 438,000 deaths. The statistics are scary when one compares the number of deaths from mosquito-borne diseases to that of the deadly Ebola virus, which has recently killed over 1,000 in central and west Africa. The puny size of the mosquito gives the illusion that it poses no threat, but its ability to strike anyone, anywhere, at anytime makes it deadlier than several diseases including the flu which is also one of the major human killers in the world today.
Recent statistics released by the World Health Organization (WHO), suggest that over 250 million cases of malaria are reported each year worldwide. Among countries afflicted by the plague of mosquito-borne diseases, developing countries especially those located in the tropical regions and Africa are the hardest hit. Temperatures over there, inability to maintain world class health standards and other factors contribute greatly to the successful breeding of mosquitoes.
