Zika Virus Zika Virus is a fairly new Virus, the first big outbreak was reported in 2015 in Brazil. Zika Virus is fairly new in the United States, but scientists now know that it comes from a mosquito. The virus attacks the reproductive system in women. It’s the most harmful to women who are pregnant. When pregnant women get Zika, it will cause the baby to be born with microcephaly. Microcephaly makes the baby’s head smaller than average. The Zika Virus affects the reproductive system. The reproductive system allows women to have babies. The egg could follicle for two-hundred-and-ninety days, which is almost nine months. Zika Virus infects the cells forming the brain’s cortex, the thin, outer layer of gray folded matter. That made those cells more likely to die and less likely to divide normally and make new brain cells. During pregnancy, the baby’s stem cells divide to build a healthy brain. Zika invades the cells and kills some and prevents others from dividing causing the construction of the cortex to stutter and not develop. That causes a smaller than average head (Science Daily 1). Microcephaly is normally a congenital neurological disorder where the circumference of a new born head is significantly below the normal average circumference for the age, gender, and race of the child. Other side effects besides birth defects is fever, rash, eye inflammation, and muscle defects. The Aedas is the specie of mosquito that gives you Zika Virus. Aedas are aggressive daytime biters and feed both indoor and outdoor near dwellings. The only reported transmission in the United States has been in two areas of Miami, Florida.
