How I overcame my Obstacles An extraordinary scientist by the name of Dr. (APJ) Abdul Kalam once said, “When we tackle obstacles, we find hidden reserves of courage and resilience we did not know we had. And it is only when we are faced with failure do we realize that these resources were always there within us. We only need to find them and move on with our lives.” I chose this quote because it makes me want to strive to become a better person. As a result of my parent’s teachings and strong morals, I learned the importance of perseverance, financial stability, and resiliency. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, into a large family that consisted of seven children. Both hard-working parents shared their learning experiences and taught us how to become independent. We were taught the value of money and never to take things for granted. My mom and dad came from large families with strong family values. Their parents did not have much money and had barely enough to support their family. I can recall the stories my dad told us of growing up and how, in particular, about how he would go to bed hungry. My mom started working at the age of twelve as a maid to help provide money for my grandmother and her younger siblings. Although my parents both experienced struggles as a child, this never affected the way we were brought up. Instead, it paved a way on how to succeed for me and my siblings.
