How I Have Surgery For Special Education Program Essay

When I was 4 years old, I had to have surgery to remove voice nodules off my vocal chords. After the surgery, my speech development was greatly affected which soon affected my mental development. When I started Kindergarten it became very clear to my teacher and my parents that I needed additional help with my education. My teacher and my parents got together and started the Special Education process which included four phases; Phase One- Initiating the Referral, Phase Two- Assessing Student Eligibility and Educational Need, Phase Three- Developing Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Phase Four- Determining the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) (Hardman, Drew, & Egan, 2015). During Phase One Initiating the Referral, my teacher and my parents had made referrals which these requests went to the school’s special services committee for review to determine my eligibility for Special Education services. Talking to my mother and from personal memory the school committee made the decision to first, have a paraprofessional work with me in the classroom and second with my parent’s permission have me evaluated to determine my need of Special Education services. I remember Phase Two Assessing Student Eligibility and Educational Need very clearly because as a five year old it was very traumatic for me to be tested and questioned by complete strangers who shook their head at my answers.
