At the beginning of the novel, Jasper was a confident and a cheerful teenager who had a bright attitude and had a good relationship with his friends. Jasper didn’t converse conversations with people and wasn’t close with his friends unlike his usual self. Jaime had expressed that “The bitterness and distance in his tone shocked me for we had been close, but as I tried to find that common ground we used to share, he kept moving away.” The childhood friendships that Jasper had with his friends had gone and he was no longer close to them.
As the kidnapping took place, Jasper’s leadership skills shined through as he took control of the situation and cared for the girl’s safety. “We have to escape – it’s imperative – especially for your safety.” The kidnapping made Jasper more protective of the girls as they were very vulnerable and he tried to get the girls into a safer environment.
The confrontment by Sohail made Jasper reflect himself on his life and helped him realise his inner feelings about God. He resented God for taking his father away but as Sohail had criticized Jasper for his faith in God, Jasper had realised that he had went against everything that his father had believed in.
