How Does Wiesel Use Language In The Book Thief

“There were the erased pages of Mein Kampf, gagging, suffocating under the paint as they turned.” In The Book Thief, there are many things that show us the power of words. I believe that the Book Thief expressed the Power of Words through persuasion, imagery, and action with words.
Firstly, I think that The Book Thief shows the power of persuasion. When Liesel hides away because of the Nazis and the fact that she was hiding a Jew, she was reading more. Liesel was persuaded to cope with the fact that a Jew was in the basement and she had to deal with it, especially when the Nazis came. Hitler persuaded people to follow him, and because of Hitler, Liesel had to worry every time there was a knock on the door, fearing it would be the Nazis trying to take away the Jew (Max). Another good reason is because Ilsa persuades Liesel to read more. After Liesel decides to keep stealing from Ilsa’s house, she gives a dictionary to Liesel with a letter in it, saying that she should come visit sometimes because she sees it better for her to visit through the front door.

When Max was in the basement, he had absolutely nothing to do every single day. Eventually, Max decided to use the book, Mein Kampf, to draw out doodles for Liesel. He drew a short story at first, using a paintbrush and gave it to Liesel (a “late birthday present”). Liesel read it a few times then sat next to Max the next day, thanking him. This doodle was just a few pictures and words strung together, but it meant something to Liesel. The next time Max gave Liesel something, it was a well written short story. This time, Max was gone because of Hans’ act, but Liesel still enjoyed the story and wondered where Max was. This represented the power of words because The Word Shaker was made before Max left and put Liesel into a deep thought of where Max went. The story also showed how Hitler carefully planned out how he would rule

Liesel discovers that kind words can be utilized to battle evil ones and I think that is part of what gives joy to Liesel and Max. You see, he took something that was hateful and discriminating and turned it into something that Liesel could enjoy, that was about Himself and his long journey to where he was then and even though Mein Kampf was full of hatred he turned it into something Liesel could enjoy knowing that she loves books it is a simple gesture that came from the heart of his character showing humanity inside him but it didn’t matter how well written the book was it was the fact that Liesel had something to remember Max by that brought her the joy and…

Additionally, Max writes “The Standover Man”, a story that illustrates Max and Liesel’s friendship, on the pages of Mein Kampf. This symbolizes the contradiction between kindness and evil. This also suggests that Max and Liesel’s companionship is more powerful and important than Hitler’s story. Markus Zusak’s struggle becomes clear when Death narrates: “…I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both” (491).…

Liesel continues to read her book as more people start to listen to her and soon the whole basement is calmed by her words (Zusak 381-383).
