The movie did an adequate job in giving details about the relationships Liesel had with a variety of characters. In the movie, many of the details from the book were included, which made it very intriguing. There were minor details missing, but overall the movie got the general idea of the book. The movie did a good job interpreting the book with Liesel’s relationship with many different characters.
In both The Book Thief movie and book, Liesel and Rudy had a very tight relationship. They became close from walking to school together almost every morning, and she became comfortable with Rudy very quickly. Hans first built his relationship with Liesel by reading The Grave Digger’s Handbook to her. He also respected her well, and treated her like a real daughter. When Hans found out about her stealing books, he was very calm and it became their own “little secret”. Hans helped Liesel feel like she was in “good hands”. In the beginning of both the book and the movie, Rosa was a little unappreciative of Liesel. Liesel felt scared, and was unwilling to talk. As time went on, Liesel became more comfortable and knew what not to do around Rosa. She also helped Rosa lighten up in certain circumstances, such as in the basement when they were playing with the snow. Rosa and Liesel had some ups and downs when they first met each other, but they eventually started to become closer. Max was almost like Liesel’s best friend. When Max first arrived at the Hubermann’s, Liesel seemed scared of him. Liesel was able to relate to Max easily because they had reoccurring nightmares about their parents being taken away from them. Max also gave Liesel a book called The Standover Man, which was basically a story about his life. Liesel also took very good care of Max when he was sick, and that helped them become
